A Cool Professor and The Zoo Story
I am taking American drama course taught by professor Kim ** this semester.
We have been using The Zoo Story for the textbook in class. When I signed up for
American drama course this semester, I didn''t expect that I would learn a lot from
this couse. However, now it is a whole new ball game.
Professor Kim is enormously popular with the students, so over almost one hundred
students are attending this course. I didn''t imagine him to be such a cool professor.
He really does meaure up to his reputation. It seems like he knows everything about
his area. I never thought I could find such a wonderful professor as him. I didn''t
know he had it in him. Recently, I found out from my seniors that he is an outstanding
figure in the field of drama.
He is in his mid fities. His nice manner and good impression make him look younger than
his age. He has a deep and nice voice. His appearance doesn''t catch everyone''s eyes,
though he is very impressive and elegant. He has good taste in clothes. Blue is an
eapecially becoming color on him.
He has a good sense of humor in class. I admire that he tries to create a good
atmosphere throughout class. I have never seen him a bit under the weather in class.
He reads our minds. We are all smiles. We are eager to listen to him. Surprisingly,
there is never anyone chatting or sleeping in class. We are raely bored with listening
to the professor. I have almost always been impressed with the inspiring lectures he has
given. I have to admit, it is something.
There is another reason that I am head over heals about his class. The textbook is
The Zoo Story. It is written by Edward Albee. Edward Albee described the zoo as
a man-made hell, where people are separated by bars and communication is impossible.
The Zoo is the condition of human existence and the world in which we live.
What Albee has written in The Zoo Story is a modern Morality play. Man in his natural
state is alone. He is a prisoner of self. If he sccumbs to fear, he enforces his isolation
in denying it. Because he pretends that he is not alone, he surrounds himself with things
and ideas that bolster between himself and all other creatures.
The Zoo Story does not preach pessimism, defeat, failure,or the inherent degradation
and purposelessness of the human condition. Rather it endorses and stresses the value,
the need, the salvation, in human relations. For Albee, the world is not absurd and
senseless unless man chooses to let it become so for himself.
Unfortunately, the zoo story duplicates and represents the Korean society in which I live.
That is why I got into The Zoo Story.
I will recommend my juniors that they choose American drama course by professor Kim if
they dream of attending a fantastic class. They will not regret taking this course.
You can count on me. I can guarantee it. As you attend his class, you will realize
that he is the one you are looking for.
I always look forward to seeing him. I count on my fingers to the next class when
I see him again. I feel very lucky to have him and The Zoo Story in my life.
